and Christian Initiation …
a journey that engages the heart, mind, body and soul
Why Search for Jesus in a Catholic Church Community?
Life asks three questions: Why are we here? Where are we going and how do we get there? What’s at the end of life’s journey? “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” (John 17:33)
Together through the process of Christian Initiation we explore the answers to these questions, and emerge as new creations in Christ Jesus. “Ask in my name and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.” (John 17:24)
The Church (people of Christian faith) is the visible living presence of God. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20)
Scripture, Tradition, Sacraments, Liturgy, and the People of God all reveal a loving God who is always in search of his children. “It is not the will of your heavenly Father that even one of these little ones be lost.” (Matthew 18:14)
Who is Christian Initiation For?
Anyone who is not baptized, baptized in another Christian tradition, has been away from the Church for a while, or searching for something more in life. We welcome children, youth and adults.
What Can You Expect?
To be accompanied by caring adults who love God and their Church, and have the gift of faith to share with you.
To discover that faith is a wonderful journey where together we explore life’s purpose and God’s love.
To benefit from the love and encouragement of a faith community.
How Does Christian Initiation Happen?
Period of Inquiry: this is a time of no fixed duration, to ask questions, share your story, develop relationships, and experience prayer/talking with God. You and the Holy Spirit decide when to move you to the next phase. The aim is an initial conversion/a change.
Period of Catechumenate: you now have a desire to deepen their faith, to get to know the parish community by participating in its life of fellowship, prayer and service, and learning about the Catholic-Christian beliefs and practices. Again, the move to the next phase rests on you and Holy Spirit. The aim here is a deepening of the initial conversion.
Period of Purification and Enlightment: six weeks of inner spiritual reflection, as we prepare for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter Vigil. The aim is to avoid sin and affirm your sacredness.
Period of Mystagogia/Reflection: having been received and consecrated into full communion with the Catholic Church, you are immersed in the ongoing celebration of active participation in the life of the Church and her Sacraments. The aim is continued conversion to God.
